NICHOLAS DENTON PROTSACK | COMPOSER-CELLIST

Moth Quartet

Moth Quartet, formed in 2023 in Wellington (NZ), is a quartet of composer-performers dedicated to exploring and reimagining the identity of the contemporary string quartet. Comprised of Salina Fisher (violin), Tristan Carter (violin), Elliot Vaughan (viola), and Nicholas Denton Protsack (cello), the ensemble engages in composing and performing music for string quartet that often transcends genre and classification—sometimes taking the form of daringly experimental improvised music, at other times creating bespoke string quartet arrangements for innovative singer-songwriters, like Twinn Ethyr. The ensemble's debut album, Scree Scrub Mountain Sky (2024), is a testament to their collective creativity and commitment to exploring new musical frontiers; their approach to composing the music of the album was to place themselves directly in the landscapes of Tongariro National Park, on New Zealand’s North Island, and simply reply to what they heard and saw. In addition to being formidable improvisors on their respective instruments, the members of Moth Quartet are also established composers in the vibrant contemporary music scene of Wellington—each with a unique and idiosyncratic solo practice. The resulting collective is a musical force to be reckoned with that is destined to become an indispensable member of New Zealand’s musical landscape.

Branchroot ensemble

Comprised of Darren Williams (saxophone), Nicholas Denton Protsack (cello), and Andrew Stauffer (percussion, found objects), Kelowna, BC’s Branchroot Ensemble is a trio of experimental musicians who explore free improvisation and other atypical methods of music-making. The trio has been lauded for its eclectic approach to free improvisation, fusing elements of contemporary classical, free jazz, avant-rock, and folk into their performances, until each genre has become wholly unrecognizable. Branchroot Ensemble has been featured in the Living Things International Arts Festival, as well as the Okanagan Experimental Music (OXM) Concert Series. In 2023, the trio released its debut album, Far From the Tree.

Sounds Like Things

Sounds Like Things is an experimental music duo formed in 2020 by percussionist-composer, Andrew Stauffer, and cellist-composer, Nicholas Denton Protsack. Sounds Like Things takes novel approaches to their music, exploring the sonic possibilities of found objects, extended techniques, alternate tuning systems, effects pedals, electronics, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Improvisation features heavily in their live performances. In addition to their primary instruments, Stauffer (pitched and unpitched percussion) and Denton Protsack (cello) utilize other instruments such as the hammer dulcimer, flutes, guitar, piano, and various found objects and homemade instruments.
